Miguel got us into Pena before the crowds arrived. By the time the tour buses started filling the square, we were already back at the car heading to Regaleira. Changed the whole day.

8 hours door-to-door

Collect 8:30am from your hotel, back by 5:30pm. We tailor start times for late risers or early-bird photographers.

Door-to-door from Lisbon

Any hotel, apartment, or cruise terminal in greater Lisbon. Also pickup from Cascais, Estoril, or LIS airport.

Licensed driver-guide

Fluent English, deep Sintra knowledge, RNAAT-licensed. Not a generic guide — one who grew up in the region.

Flexible itinerary

Stay longer at the places you love. Skip the ones you don’t. The route is yours to shape along the way.

The day, hour by hour

A full day in Sintra,
shaped around you.

This is the itinerary we recommend, but nothing is rigid. If you want to spend three hours at Regaleira and skip Cascais, we rearrange on the spot. If you want a sunset at Cabo da Roca instead of a morning visit, we flip the order. The timing below is a default, not a tour-bus schedule.

8:30am
Pickup

01.Hotel Pickup in Lisbon

Your driver arrives at your hotel or apartment door, helps with water and anything you want to bring for the day. A quick intro, a pre-planned route on the dashboard map, and we’re off — up the A5 motorway toward Sintra.

02.Pena Palace — Before the Crowds

The most photographed building in Portugal, and for good reason. We time arrival for the 9:30am gate opening so you walk the terraces while they’re still quiet. Yellow towers, red pavilions, a stone crocodile that greets you at the gate. Expect 90 minutes of wandering.

03.Moorish Castle Viewpoint

A quick stop at the Castelo dos Mouros — 9th-century Moorish ramparts that snake across the ridge opposite Pena. Optional 30-minute walk along the walls if you want, or just the panoramic photo stop if you’re saving legs for later in the day.

04.Quinta da Regaleira & the Initiation Well

A 20th-century estate that reads like a Dan Brown novel — Templar iconography, secret tunnels, and the famous spiral Initiation Well descending nine stories underground. You climb down one well and emerge from another across the garden. Expect 90 minutes of exploration through hidden passages and grottoes.

05.Lunch in Sintra Vila

A stop in Sintra’s historic center for a proper Portuguese lunch — bacalhau à brás, polvo à lagareiro, or travesseiros (the almond pastry Sintra is famous for) at Piriquita for dessert. We book ahead at a family-run tasca so you’re seated when you arrive. Lunch cost is on you, typically €20–35 per person.

06.Cabo da Roca — The Edge of Europe

The westernmost point of continental Europe, a dramatic cliff where the Atlantic drops away 140 meters below. On clear days you see 40 kilometers of coastline. Bring a jacket — it’s always windier than you’d expect. The must-do photograph at the stone marker confirming the spot.

Signature moment Atlantic clifftop

07.Cascais — Harbor Stroll & Café

Ending on the Portuguese Riviera. Twenty minutes walking the old fishermen’s harbor, the ice-cream shops, the tiled streets of the old town. A coffee or glass of vinho verde at a café overlooking the sea before the drive back. Optional — if you’re tired, we skip it.

08.Hotel Drop-off

Back to your hotel in Lisbon with time for a rest before dinner. Expect to be footsore and happy. We can also drop you at a restaurant or bar directly if you’d rather go straight to your evening plans — just let us know.

We had done Sintra as a rushed bus tour years ago and thought we’d seen it. This private day showed us we hadn’t. Miguel knew every quiet viewpoint, which café does the best travesseiro, and timed every stop so we were never waiting in a queue.

Sintra-specific questions

Before you book.

Questions we hear most often about the Sintra tour specifically. For general booking and pricing info, see our main FAQ.

Sintra is spectacular year-round. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the most comfortable weather and saturated greens. Summer (July–August) is busiest and hottest but the days are longer. Winter (November–February) is quieter with mist rolling through the hills — moody and atmospheric if you love that. Pena Palace looks magical in every season.

Absolutely. Common alternative stops for returning visitors: Monserrate Palace (romantic, quiet), Capuchos Convent (cork-lined monastic cells), Adraga Beach (wild Atlantic coast), Praia das Maçãs (beach town for lunch), or the National Palace of Sintra in the old town. Let us know at booking and we’ll build a custom day.

Moderate — the day involves about 5–6 kilometers total on foot across several stops. Pena Palace terraces are hilly with cobblestones. Regaleira has steps down into the Initiation Well (you can skip this; there’s an easier path). Cabo da Roca is flat but windy. We can adapt for knees, mobility issues, or strollers — tell us at booking.

By default, tickets are bought at the gate on the day (no wait in low season; 10–40 min wait in high season). If you add the “Pre-Purchased Entry Tickets” extra (+€29 per person for Pena & Regaleira), we buy them in advance and you skip every queue. In July–August peak, this extra is strongly recommended.

Yes, particularly ages 7+. Regaleira (with its tunnels, hidden passages, and Initiation Well) is one of the best kid-friendly palaces in Europe. Pena Palace looks like a real-life fairy-tale castle. Cabo da Roca is dramatic but needs supervision at the cliff edge. Child seats and booster seats are on request additional charges apply. Under 5s may get tired — we can shorten the day if needed.

Yes — €40 less than the Lisbon-departing price because you’re already closer to Sintra. We pick you up at your Cascais/Estoril hotel, run the full 8-hour itinerary, and drop you back. We can also pick up from Sintra itself if you’re staying there (€60 less).

The tour runs in light rain — bring a jacket and it’s actually when Sintra is most atmospheric. In heavy rain we adjust: more indoor palace time, less cliff-walking at Cabo da Roca, and a longer lunch. If weather makes the tour genuinely impossible, we reschedule or refund fully. You’ll never be stranded with a driver in bad conditions.

That’s already what this tour does — Cascais is the optional final stop on the way back to Lisbon. If you want more time in Cascais (lunch, beach walk, harbor stroll), we can rebalance the day: shorter Regaleira visit, longer Cascais. Or consider our dedicated Cascais & Estoril half-day tour for a coast-focused itinerary.
