The Scenic Route,
stop by stop.

If you choose the extended heritage route, here’s what you’ll see along the way — each stop hand-picked to break up the drive and show you a Portugal most travelers never reach.

01.Óbidos — Medieval Walled Town

A 1000-year-old whitewashed town enclosed by complete medieval walls. Walk the ramparts, try ginjinha (sour-cherry liqueur) served in edible chocolate cups, and browse the bookshop inside the old church.

60 min Medieval Heritage
~ 1h from Lisbon

02.Nazaré Sítio — Clifftop Old Town

Take the funicular up to Sítio, the original clifftop settlement. Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré and some of the most dramatic Atlantic viewpoints in Portugal. The cliff here drops 318 meters to the Praia do Norte below.

60 min Historic Village
~ 1h 30m from Lisbon

03.Farol — The Lighthouse Museum

The red-painted fort-lighthouse where Garrett McNamara made history surfing a 30m wave in 2020. Inside: broken surfboards, the giant tow-in jet skis, and the gallery of world records. Outside: the viewing platform above Praia do Norte itself.

45 min Surf Landmark
~ 10 min from Sítio

04.Praia do Norte — Big Wave Beach

The beach where the Nazaré Canyon meets the Atlantic, creating the conditions for world-record waves. Best viewing from October through March; even on flat summer days, the beach itself is dramatic. A walk on the sand puts the scale in perspective.

30 min Atlantic Coast
~ 5 min from Lighthouse

05.Grilled Fish Lunch & Return

A stop at a family tasca in the lower town for grilled sardines, caldeirada (fish stew), and vinho verde. Then back to Lisbon — arrive home by late afternoon.

90 min Seafood Lunch
Return ~ 1h 30m

Questions about Lisbon → Nazaré

The usual questions.

Specific questions about the Lisbon to Nazaré route. Looking for general booking info? See our main FAQ.

Big wave season runs from October through March, peaking in late October to early February. The biggest days require a specific combination of Atlantic swell, winds, and tides — the WSL Nazaré Challenge typically takes place between November and February when conditions allow. Summer (June-September) is safe for beach walking but waves are normal size.

Yes. The drive is direct, the scenery is pleasant, and Nazaré itself is very family-friendly — sandy beaches, a funicular to the cliff, a lighthouse museum kids love, and no risky coastal paths. The V-Class comfortably seats two adults and three kids with luggage.

Easily. Our most-booked itinerary is exactly that: Lisbon → Óbidos (1h ramparts walk) → Nazaré (cliff, lighthouse, lunch) → return. Total 7-8 hours door-to-door at €420. We can also add Alcobaça Monastery between the two towns if time allows.

For surf fans, absolutely. For non-surfers, still yes — the photographs, videos, and broken surfboards tell a story about the pure scale of what happens there. Entry is €2. The outdoor viewing platform behind the lighthouse is free and offers unmatched views over Praia do Norte.

Cooler than Lisbon by 2-4°C on average, with Atlantic winds that can be strong on the clifftop. Summer highs 22-26°C, winter 12-17°C. Bring a windbreaker even in summer — especially if you plan to stand at the lighthouse.

Yes. Our surfer package combines LIS airport pickup, 3-7 nights in Nazaré, daily driver on-call for swell runs to Peniche or Ericeira, and return to LIS. Custom quoted — WhatsApp for details with your dates and group size.
