If you choose the extended heritage route, here’s what you’ll see along the way — each stop hand-picked to break up the drive and show you a Portugal most travelers never reach.
The apparition site where three shepherd children reported visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917. The Capelinha das Aparições (Chapel of the Apparitions) marks the exact spot; the vast esplanade accommodates pilgrims by the hundreds of thousands on May 13 and October 13.
The humble villages where Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta grew up. Their original houses are preserved exactly as they were — powerful, quiet places for reflection away from the Sanctuary crowds.
The small hilltop site of the earlier angelic apparitions, with the stone marker of the Hungarian Way of the Cross leading through olive groves. Most day-trippers miss this — it's where many pilgrims say they feel the most peace.
A breathtaking 14th-century Gothic-Manueline monastery, UNESCO listed, built to commemorate the Portuguese victory at Aljubarrota. The Unfinished Chapels are open to the sky — one of the most moving spaces in Portugal.
