September—October is special — harvest (vindima) is happening, the lagares are in use, the valley smells of fermenting grapes, and many quintas offer grape-stomping experiences (see add-ons). May—June is beautifully green with mild weather and fewer crowds. July—August is hot (often 35°C+) but stunning — bring a sun hat. November—March is quieter and dramatic, with bare vines, often-misty mornings, and lower prices. The tour runs year-round.

Both come from the same grape varieties in the same vineyards — the difference is the process. Port wine is fortified: during fermentation, neutral grape spirit is added, which stops the fermentation, leaves residual sugar, and raises the alcohol to ~20%. The result is sweet, intense, and ages for decades. Douro table wine (DOC Douro) is the same grapes fermented to completion — dry, complex reds and whites that have only become internationally recognized in the last 20 years. Most travelers know Port; the table wines are often the bigger discovery of the day.

Tasting pours are small — typically 30–50ml each, so 7 pours across the day equals roughly 2–3 standard glasses of wine spread over 5 hours, plus lunch. Most guests feel comfortably warm but not impaired. If you want to taste without finishing every pour, every tasting room has dump buckets — pour what you don’t want into them, this is completely normal and expected. Hydration helps; we keep cold water in the car at all times. The driver, of course, doesn’t drink.

Yes — this is one of the most common things guests do. Both quintas sell their own wines and most offer international shipping. Typical prices: €15–25 for table wines, €25–50 for aged Tawnies, €60–200 for Vintage Ports. Shipping costs: roughly €60–120 per case of 12 bottles to most countries; ~10 business days. Within the EU, you can also carry several bottles back in your luggage (check airline limits) — we provide secure bottle bags for free.

You can, but few people do during this tour — the schedule is tight and the riverbanks at Pinhão aren’t set up for swimming. If swimming is a priority, the overnight Pinhão extension is the way to do it: some quinta-hotels have river-access pools or designated swim areas. The river itself is clean (recently rated swimmable by the Portuguese environmental authority) but currents in the dam-regulated sections can be strong.

Yes — about 15% of our Douro guests don’t drink at all. The landscape, the architecture, the lunch, the history, the river boat ride all stand on their own. Quintas offer grape juices, sparkling water, and house-made non-alcoholic options. We tell the quintas in advance if you have a non-drinker in the group so they prepare accordingly. The day works just as well as a scenic, gastronomic, cultural experience without the wine.
